Hard work, honest relationships, clear communication and proactive planning are qualities that contribute to the success of most builders, and when the builder is successful in both commercial and residential markets, these qualities take on added significance. Terry W. Poythress has established his reputation as a successful commercial and residential builder by applying these qualities in all his projects and with all his customers. Born in Henderson, NC, Terry and his family have lived in many parts of the country as a result of his dad’s work as an engineer with Stone Webster Engineering out of Boston, MA. He graduated high school in Stoneham, MA and over the years continued his studies in project management and marketing. Prior to starting his company in 1992, Terry worked as a project manager for two construction companies. He spent 10 years with Flour Daniel and five years with Pizziagalli Construction. “While employed with them,” he explains, “I developed the desire to go into the building business on my own. I was successful as a project manager and all of my background at this point was in the commercial market.” At this time, however, the residential market in the Triangle was booming, so Terry also decided to take advantage of the growth in that arena. “I like working with people, choosing plans with customers, and having the flexibility to alter plans if needed.”
Poythress Homes Inc. has built quality homes at Preston in Cary, Weston Estates, Meadowmont in Chapel Hill and many other fine developments. Terry has won numerous awards in the Wake County Parade of Homes, which includes the winner of one perfect score. He is active in the Home Builders Association, is a member of the Cary Chamber of Commerce and is on the board of directors of the Morrisville Chamber of Commerce.
Terry prides himself in finding new and innovative ways of doing things. “We are very open-minded about technology and using better methods to achieve our goals.” he notes.
By keeping the qualities of honesty, integrity, and proactive involvement at the forefront of his businesses, Terry will surely continue to be a pacesetter for years to come.
